Driving to Blue Lakes Colorado

It is very important to drive with care and respect. If you are driving a 2WD vehicle, I would recommend you not to drive this route if you do not have experience driving on rough roads. With that being said, the Blue Lake Trails are completely paved with gravel around Blue Lakes and one parking garage is located on Upper Shore above the dam and the other below the dam. So, even if you don’t have a 4WD vehicle I would still recommend going out there for sure!

Is Blue Lakes Road open to using?

Blue Lake Roads in Breckenridge are closed seasonally and winter roads are snow-filled. It is possible to drive on Blue Lake Road through the winter, but it is dangerous and not recommended.

Driveways leading to homes along Blue Lake Road may be closed during the winter months and some homeowners may choose to keep their driveways open year-round for access. The road itself is also not plowed during the winter months, so you must use caution when driving on it as well.

Directions to hike to Blue Lakes falls

Start at the Blue Lake Trailhead, which is located in Breckenridge on Highway 9. The parking lot is small, so you may have to park a little farther down the road.

Follow the blue blazes along the Lower Shore Trail as you hike toward Breckenridge. At about 0.2 miles, turn right onto Mine Road and follow it uphill until you reach a wooden bench with a bunch of flowers on it. It’s not marked, but this is where you’ll want to turn left (east).

The trail crosses over two smaller roads before coming to another bench with a signpost that says “Blue Lake.” This is where there are restrooms available at Lumpy Ridge Campground (which is part of the Breckenridge Ski Resort). Go straight here and follow the dirt road downhill until you come upon another wooden bench with a bunch of flowers on it. This time, turn left (northwest) and continue hiking for about 0.5 miles until you reach Blue Lake at about 1 mile from your starting point.
